Stephanie Shultz, the mother of four children in Louisville, Kentucky, began stocking Covid-19 for rapid testing at home in July. She snapped up about 20 boxes. “I think my children are going back to school, and we will need them,” she said.

She also offered tests to friends: as the number of cases increased, appointments at the testing center became more and more difficult to obtain, and quick tests were sold out in stores.
