HIV test kits come in various types, each offering specific advantages and disadvantages. Here are the main types of HIV test kits:

    Rapid HIV Antibody Tests: These tests detect antibodies produced by the immune system in response to HIV infection. They typically use a small blood sample obtained through a finger prick or oral fluid (saliva). Rapid antibody tests provide results within 20 minutes, making them suitable for point-of-care testing in clinics, community settings, and at home. Examples include the OraQuick Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody Test and INSTI HIV-1/HIV-2 Antibody Test.

    Rapid Combination (Antibody and Antigen) Tests: These tests detect both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen, a protein produced by the HIV virus during the early stages of infection. Combination tests offer earlier detection than antibody-only tests because they can detect HIV infection before antibodies develop. They use a blood sample obtained through a finger prick or oral fluid. Examples include the Alere Determine HIV-1/2 Ag/Ab Combo Test and INSTI HIV-1/HIV-2 Antibody/Antigen Test.

    Home Test Kits: Home HIV test kits allow individuals to test for HIV in the privacy of their own homes. They typically use a finger prick blood sample or oral fluid sample and provide results within minutes. Home test kits may be antibody-only tests or combination tests. Examples include the OraQuick In-Home HIV Test and BioSURE HIV Self Test.

    Laboratory-Based Tests: Laboratory-based HIV tests are conducted in clinical laboratories using blood samples collected by healthcare professionals. These tests may include enzyme immunoassays (EIAs) or chemiluminescent immunoassays (CIAs) to detect HIV antibodies or combination tests to detect both antibodies and antigens. Laboratory-based tests offer high sensitivity and specificity and are typically used for confirmatory testing following a positive rapid test result.

    Point-of-Care CD4 Tests: CD4 tests measure the number of CD4 T-cells in the blood, which is an important indicator of immune function in people living with HIV. Point-of-care CD4 tests provide rapid results and can help determine the stage of HIV infection and eligibility for antiretroviral therapy (ART). Examples include the Alere Pima CD4 Test and BD FACSPresto Near-Patient CD4 Counter.

    These are the main types of HIV test kits available, each with its own characteristics, advantages, and limitations. The choice of test depends on factors such as testing location, resource availability, testing strategy, and regulatory approval in the respective country or region.
