2. Interferon-Gamma Release Assays (IGRAs) IGRAs are blood tests that measure the immune response to specific TB proteins. These tests are more specific than the TST and are not affected by prior BCG vaccination, which can lead to false positives in TST. IGRAs are particularly useful in diagnosing LTBI and are recommended for use in individuals with a low risk of developing active TB.


Procedure for TB Testing


The process for undergoing a TB test is relatively straightforward. For the TST, a healthcare provider will clean the injection site, administer the PPD, and provide the individual with instructions on when to return for reading the test. For IGRAs, individuals will have their blood drawn and sent to a laboratory for analysis.


After testing, if a person tests positive, further evaluation is necessary to determine whether they have active TB disease. This evaluation may include a chest X-ray, sputum tests, and a physical examination. If active TB is confirmed, the individual will need to start a treatment regimen that often includes multiple antibiotics taken over several months.
